Sports Premium Funding
Sport Funding
At Ropley we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative, varied physical activity opportunities, PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children. A mix of different activities, sports and opportunities for ALL to participate and compete at different levels are at the heart of our planning.
Our Primary School Sport’s Funding will enable us to continue and extend our provision through providing the opportunity to engage all pupils in regular physical activity, employing additional sports professionals, entering into more competitive and non competitive sports competitions and training our staff to deliver in-house quality PE sessions.
What is the Sports Premium?
The government is providing funding of £150 million per annum for each academic year to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of physical activity, sport and PE for all their children. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
Purpose of the funding
Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. See below for details of Ropley's planned expenditure on PE and sport in 2023-24 and if you would like further details do not hesitate to contact the school office.
2023-24
This year we have been allocated £17,373 Sports Premium Funding, which is made up of a lump sum with an additional allocation of £10 per pupil (Years 1-6 only). A full break down of how we have spent/will spend this money is listed in our school action plan, a copy of which is available from the school office.
The Sports Premium Funding enables us to make long-lasting changes to the provision of equipment for our children and has allowed us to develop our whole school approach to the delivery and assessment of physical activity and P.E. In addition, all of the developments that have been made to raise the profile of sporting activities and P.E. across the school are sustainable at a low cost.
Key areas of expenditure this year are:
- Ongoing CPD for class teachers through quality coaching in multi-sports; running; rugby; invasion games; rounders; cricket; badminton and swimming.
- Support for class teachers with planning and assessment in PE
- A dedicated swimming coach for 6 weeks in the Summer term to give swimming lessons to every child in school, in our own pool.
- Replacement gymnastics mats.
- Maintenance of a traversing wall, climbing frame and balance beams which encourages the improvement of gross motor skills and core muscle groups.
- A wide range of additional sporting opportunities for every child, regardless of skill or expertise, through our partnership with Soccer Schools.
The Department for Education issues clear guidelines on how schools are expected to spend their funding, giving five key indicators which schools should expect to see improvement across. These are:
· the engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity - the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
· the profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
· increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
· broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
· increased participation in competitive sport. Our action plan involves investing our funding in resources which will enable us to improve in all of the above areas.
Children are thoroughly enjoying PE, and this shows in their effort, enthusiasm and attainment which is, in turn, reflected across all areas of the curriculum. We were delighted to be awarded the Gold Sports Mark again this year which is a reflection of our continued commitment to improving our physical activity and PE offer to all children at Ropley School.
